Family Trip to Rio Branco

Just a few weeks ago we had an opportunity to travel as a family. It was the longest trip we have ever taken in Brazil. We traveled over 1500 miles round trip. Taking into consideration the road conditions, this was quite a long trip. We found that the worse stretch of road on the whole trip was the first 25 miles from our house.

We have much to praise the Lord for! This trip would have been much more difficult had it not been for our new vehicle. Though we did not need the 4 wheel drive on this trip, we did need the larger tires and higher vehicle. I am not sure our previous car would have made the entire trip without incident, but we must praise the Lord that this one did. The only damage to the car was all the bugs on the front. Some just do not want to come off!

The road conditions to Rio Branco were much better than we expected. Amanda volunteered to drive! Now that is saying something! She hates these roads. We even had to cross the river on a ferry, which was a first for our boys.

Ferry Crossing
Our whole family spent about 31 hours together in the car on this trip. That gave us plenty of time together. This car has a CD player in it! We listened to quite a few Patch the Pirate and Adventures in Odyssey episodes. The boys were looking forward to listening to some new things.

Once we arrived in Rio Branco, we were able to spend a few days with the Doolittles. Our boys enjoyed meeting their two younger boys (Joshua and Benjamin) and the five of them had a great time together. The Doolittles were also a great encouragement to Amanda and me.

We were able to see the new location they have been meeting in. It is on the edge of town. Though a few people were not all that excited about the change in the beginning, it seems as though things have picked up and people are enjoying it now. The Lord is using the church to reach many people in the area.

Amanda and I also sat in on one of the Bible Institute classes. They have four students and the courses are all done through videos.

One of the days we were with them, we enjoyed an afternoon playing ball with some of the young people in the church. We also had a good time eating pizza afterwards.

It is always refreshing to spend time with other missionaries. There are many things we share in common that other people do not understand. It is also exciting to see how God works in the lives of other missionaries.

Thanksgiving in Brazil

This Thanksgiving was not unlike other Thanksgivings we have had here in Brazil. The Brazilians do not celebrate Thanksgiving, so we usually get together with other missionary families and make a fun day out of it. This Thanksgiving we were able to be with the Brewers, Kokenzies and the Rogers.
Thanksgiving

Tom and Cindy Brewer opened up their home to all of us. We had 21 people there all together. It was quite an event since we all stayed in the same house. How did we do it? Well, below is a picture of a very Brazilian way of solving the problem. We thought Bro. Brewer might have been a little overzealous in planning all of this, but in the end it worked out quite well (not sure how much sleeping took place though)!

Thanksgiving

We are very thankful that God has chosen us to be missionaries. Yet, sometimes in the ministry we have to give up a few things. Thanksgiving and Christmas are times when we would like to be with our family. We miss the fun times with family, but try to still make these times special for our own children.

This Thanksgiving was very exciting for our boys. They talked about it and waited anxiously for weeks before hand. Having so many different children around, made things very interesting. It would not be correct to say it all went down without any incidents, but we are still thankful that it all worked out. The boys had a great time. We even played some real baseball in a yard big enough to hit the ball without it going over the wall.

Spreading the Gospel all over the world

How would you give out the Gospel if you could only quote Scripture? Suppose you could only speak words directly from the Bible. How would you tell people that their sins are keeping them from a relationship with God and that repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven?

This is a challenge that we have before us at this time! Though we have some help from people that speak the language a bit, in some languages we have nothing other than the Bible to present to people. So what should we say? Should we just quote John 3:16 over and over again? This is a point I have been pondering for years now. How much of the Gospel that I give is directly from the Bible?

The last few weeks have been very fruitful as we are expanding our outreach! It is exciting to see what God is doing.

Last week almost 10,000 people viewed content from our Facebook pages. Most of these people are from French speaking countries where we have been advertising, but a good portion of them are from Brazil and from Haiti also. How wonderful it is to get comments, questions, and responses from people who are encouraged by the Word of God.

Here is a breakdown of what has happened over the past few weeks to expand this work…

1. An Arabic page has been started on Facebook.
2. Bible studies have been added to the website in Haitian Creole.
3. A Frequently Asked Questions page was added to French so we can answer more questions quickly.
4. Business cards with the website were distributed to a few Haitian people in Porto Velho, and they will also be receiving several of the Bible studies in the near future.
5. A German Facebook page has been started.

Though these are just small opportunities, the Lord has given them to us and we are doing what we can to reach the World through Brazil. Please take a few moments and pray for this Arabic outreach this week. We started advertising today in Jordan and Iraq. In just a few hours we have had more than 50 likes. This is a great opportunity to reach into the 10/40 window with the Gospel.  Please pray!

Preaching Conference

This past weekend we were invited to visit a church in Porto Velho, the capital of our state. The pastor, Pr. Adonias, invited me almost a year ago to preach a conference for them. The invitation was set for when the remodeling was finished. They were putting a new roof on the church building and he wanted to hold a conference shortly after they finished.

Our time there was very enjoyable. It is always a pleasure to have fellowship with Brazilian pastors. We stayed with him and his wife. They have three grown children all of which are very active in the church. They were very kind to us and to our children. Praise the Lord for faithful preachers like Pr. Adonias. He has been the pastor of this church for nearly 30 years.

Preaching Conference

I had the opportunity to preach on Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening. Saturday night was the night more people showed up. I was told there were around 300 people in the service that evening. There were chairs in all the aisles and the pews were very full. We put so many people in our own pew that we had to kick 4-5 people out.

A couple of the people that have attended our Bible studies in Ouro Preto moved to Porto Velho in the last 6 months. It was a great joy to see them come on Saturday night also and listen to the preaching of the Word of God. We continue to pray for them and communicate with them even though they are living nearly 200 miles away now. God is still at work in their lives.

One of the exciting things about this church was the effort they put into the music. Many churches have special music and presentations, but few put much work into it. These people are working hard to honor the Lord with their music. The pastor’s son is the one who leads the choir, plays the piano, and orchestrates all the special music in the church. He has little formal training, but enjoys serving the Lord in this way.

You can find more pictures of our trip by clicking HERE.

While we were in Porto Velho we had the opportunity to meet Bro. Henry Mantonya and his wife. We also met his daughter and son-in-law, Steve and Robin Campbell. They are missionaries to an Indian tribe here in Brazil. We were able to spend a few hours talking to them and learning what God is doing in their lives and in the lives of those in the tribe they are working with.

On the physical side of things, we are thankful to be home safely. The trip was somewhat exhausting. Though the roads are much better now than the last time we drove them, it is still a dangerous drive. Jonathan and Judson were a little sick during the trip, but seem to be doing a bit better now. We were also glad to arrive home this time and find things just as we left them. Due to a recent break-in, and non-functional electric fence, we had home on the back of our minds during the entire trip.

Thank you for always praying for us!

A Training Center for Indian Tribes

Our First Contact with New Tribes

Since around September or October of 2012, we have had close contact with another missionary family in the city of Ji-Paraná about 30 miles from us. These missionaries are Sam and Annessa Rogers. They were on furlough when we arrived in Rondônia and did not return until closer to the end of 2012.

Bro. Sam is a go getter and soon after getting back wanted to conduct a vacation Bible school. It was while taking our children to VBS at their place that we met Wellington, a New Tribes missionary. We spoke briefly about their work, but knew we would be in contact again in the near future.

Shortly after this, Wellington’s wife Juliana gave birth to their second baby girl. Being in town not long after that, I had a chance to visit with them in their home for a few hours. We had a great time learning and finding out more about their work and where the Lord had called them.

I also met another New Tribes missionary while we were at their house. Though I did not remember this, I had previously been in contact with this missionary, Adilton. We had communicated by email nearly two years before this encounter.

Because of their knowledge about the Indian tribes and my curiosity and desire to learn more about them, we began conversations of how we could get more involved and visit some of these tribes. Adilton told us about a training center for Indian tribes that had just started in our state. He volunteered to take us to the training center when road conditions were better.

Friendships From the Lord

Being right in the middle of the rainy season, we put off our trip until after the rains would slow down quite a bit. We also had plans for traveling set up in June and my parents began talking about a visit in May. So, about the best time we found to go was right around the middle of May before my parents arrived. The date was set and we were excited about the trip.

The training center was in the city of Pimenta Bueno. This city has hit our radar several times as we have taken an interest in different cities around the state. It is a city of about 30,000 people. A few months ago I wrote about getting in contact with a missionary family in India who’s family members lived in our state. They were from this city.

We also learned through this family that there is a good Baptist church in that city. It is a Regular Baptist Church whose pastor was acquainted with many of the pastors and missionaries that we know. He was raised in the state of Amazonas, but recently came to Rondônia to pastor this church. His name is Pr. Dino. Since we had never met personally, we decided that it would be good to meet this pastor on our trip to the training center.

The Training Center

Now, let me try to connect all of these pieces for you! When the trip finally came, I drove down to Ji-Paraná and picked up Sam Rogers and the two New Tribes missionaries, Adilton and Wellington. We then drove the four hours to Pimenta Bueno. This trip under good road conditions would have taken about two and a half hours. Due to more holes than pavement and sometimes no pavement at all, delays were expected.

May 2013 Pimenta Bueno

Our first stop was Pr. Dino’s small house behind the church. We went in and had a little breakfast snack before heading over to the training center. Pastor Dino though living in the same city had never heard about the training center and did not even know it existed. He was eager to go with us for a visit.

May 2013 Pimenta Bueno

Immediately upon our arrival to the training center we met Pr. Mario. He and his wife live there and direct the ministry. I guess you could imagine it something like a year-round camp.

At the present, there are around 35 Indians living there. They come from several different places around the area and represent eight or nine different ethnic groups. Most of these are from 16-30 years old. Among this group there are two married couples.

This training center is set up for one main reason, but kills several birds at one time. The main purpose of the center is to train the Indians to become evangelists to their own people. It is a simplified Bible institute for the indigenous people.

Each morning these students sit in Bible classes and practical classes in which they learn how to share the Gospel with other people. They are taught how to draw their own stories in order to illustrate Bible truths to people who have no Bibles and in some cases, no written language at all.

May 2013 Pimenta Bueno

In the afternoons all the students are put to work. The men work on construction of dormitory buildings, gardening, and are also taught a variety of other skills that will be very useful to them in the future. The ladies are taught how to cook and also take care of cleaning all the buildings and houses.

May 2013 Pimenta Bueno

At night all of these students study in the public schools to increase their knowledge of Portuguese, Math, Science and other such subjects.

Transportation is very difficult, but the leadership is trying to get these students into different churches around the area for ministry on the weekends. They want them to get hands on training before they are sent back to their tribes.

Keeping in mind who these people are and the need to get the Gospel back into the tribes, the goal is to do what you can while you have them. Most of these students do not even have an elementary education. Therefore, this is only a two year program that attempts to give them a high school level Bible teaching enough to help them return to their tribes and share the good news of the Gospel.

One of the most interesting things to me was meeting a young man who calls himself “Phillip”. He comes from very far away. As a matter of fact, he is the one that came from the furthest distance. Yet, he knew other Indians that I have met before. I have met some of his relatives and also some of his friends. He knows other missionary friends of ours also.

It is amazing that even being hundreds of miles away from home in a place where no one speaks your native tongue, you can meet people that know your family. God is doing a work in this young man’s life. Though his family is somewhat against him, he knows that God has a great purpose for him. Since he has arrived at the training center, he has been notified that he would be next in line to be tribal chief and needs to return to help his family. However, he knows the Lord wants him to be trained and wishes to learn more before he goes back to his tribe.

Please pray for these students! This is one of the dreams I had before coming to Brazil – training the Indians to send them back to their own people to share the Gospel. God is at work answering prayers! Though these people may not be exactly like us in every way, we are able to encourage and help them in some ways. Who knows what the Lord may do through this.

Taking Time to Reach the World

It is true, we cannot be in more than one place at a time. However, reaching the world has actually become easier. It is amazing how many people you can communicate with all over the world even if you do not speak their language.

In previous posts we have written about places we are reaching around the world. We have also written about our connection with other missionaries and how praying for them has turned into a blessing to us. It is amazing what God can do when he wants to.

After developing a Gospel Facebook page for Haitian Creole, we have also invested some time into a French page. Credit must be given to Benji and Kerri Dryden for their hard work on the Creole page. On the French side of things we have the help of Stephen and Julie Knickerbocker.

It is exciting to see what God is doing as we reach out with the Gospel. There is no telling what person may receive the Gospel and what they will do with it. Here is a small map from Google with stars in locations that we have communicated with people over the past two months or so. Of course, this is not 100% accurate, but at least will give you an idea of what is going on.

Though we would like to expand what we are doing, we must not get to the point where we cannot keep up with what is going on. Once a week, I take the time to design an image with a verse on it in several different languages.

Just in English, there are many people all over the world that we can communicate with. It is amazing when you begin to study statistics that just sitting at home you could reach hundreds of thousands of people all over the world that speak your language.

Recently I spent about an hour chatting with a Nigerian missionary who is reaching a different section of Africa with the Gospel. His home church sent out 4 missionaries to this particular spot. We met online. Noone introduced us. This is not a friend of a friend, but someone that I crossed paths with simply by reaching out to a specific part of the world. Most likely, I will never meet him in person, but through him I am more aware of a specific people group in Africa that needs the Gospel.

India has also been a concentration for me in the past few months. What more can be done in that country? A friend of mine there said that in a gathering of around 12 people, 11 of them had different mother tongues. All of them spoke more than one language and many of them spoke at least three languages. The common language used among this group was English.

Next week, we will visit a Bible school that houses people from at least 7 different indian ethnic groups here in Brazil. Each of these speak a different language? How can they be helped? Obviously someone is working with them, but what more can be done. How can these people be encouraged to reach other more remote indian tribes?

Please pray for us! However, do not stop at praying for missionaries. Ask the Lord what you can do to help. What talents do you have? How can those talents be used to reach the world? Will you take the time to reach out?

“These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also.” Acts 17:6

Have these men come to your area of the world? Will you be one of these in another area of the world?

Haitian Outreach Update

Please keep praying…

With just a tiny bit of effort, God has sent us over 200 Haitian contacts in the past 3 days. We also know that some of our efforts have reach over 5,000 Haitians. These are just numbers and we have not had personal contact with these people. Yet, the Lord knows the lives of each of these and has given us an opportunity to give each of them a continued Gospel influence in their lives.

Please continue to pray with us as we use the internet to reach out to people who need to know God.

Reaching Haiti Through Brazil

The Lord has given us a unique opportunity here in Brazil of reaching Haitians for Christ. Because of recent events in Haiti, many are moving to Brazil in order to seek employment. I cannot say that they are making loads of money, but I do believe it is of the Lord that they were brought here.

Last year I wrote of two Haitian men who trusted the Lord as their Savior thousands of miles from their home. The Lord brought them to our doorstep and gave us an opportunity to witness to them. More recently a pastor friend of our who lives on the border of Bolivia has received sometimes 30 Haitians at a time in his church. Brazil has sent many soldiers to Haiti and seems to have a good relationship with the government there. We must take advantage of this while we can.

Over the past two weeks or so, I have been advertising the Haitian page on our website and the Lord has sent us nearly 100 individuals to our website. This is exciting!!! CLICK HERE to visit this page.

Today, we started a Facebook page for our Gospel Website in Creole. It is called Konnen Bondye. Below is a picture and link to the Facebook page. If you are aware of any Haitians or others who might speak Haitian Creole, including any missionaries, please send them this link. We want to spread this to as many people as possible. We will be posting weekly in Creole on this page.

Please help us pray as we reach out to Haitians not only in Brazil and Haiti but all over the world. The Lord has given us this opportunity to help people and we must use the tools He has given us to reach the world through Brazi. Thank you for praying!

New Japanese Translation

The Lord recently allowed us to move forward with the Japanese translation for our Gospel website.

While I was responding to an email received from another missionary, my wife suggested I ask them about a someone to type the Japanese translation of the Gospel for our website. They soon wrote back to let us know that they would be glad to work on it.

Three years ago, a young Brazilian lady from a church here in Brazil volunteered to translate into Japanese the Gospel presentation we were using on our website. Her only problem was that she could not type in Japanese. Shortly after her translation was finished I asked a few missionaries about the possibility of getting this typed, but they did not know anyone at the time that could do it. In the Lord’s perfect timing we were able to get this done. Now we must pray that it will make a difference in someone’s life

Below is a flag with a link directly to the Japanese page if you would like to take a look at it. If you know someone who speaks Japanese, please send them the link to this page. Please take the time to pray that people would find this page and that the Gospel would work in their hearts!

Keeping in Touch

I have recently learned that it is a good idea to keep in touch with other missionaries. God has used many of them in our lives recently. There are three specific cases that come to mind…

SPAIN

Spanish Flag

I recently wrote to a missionary in Spain, John Beck, to let them know we were praying for them. Shortly afterward we were put in contact with a Brazilian man who was won to Christ, baptized and discipled in Spain. He is now in Brazil praying about starting a church in his city. He is only about eight hours away from us and a little more than four hours away from some other missionaries who may be able to help him. For this part of the country, that is really not that far away.

Japan

Japanese Flag

2. Years ago I had met a missionary family to Japan, Ralph and Janet Burchell. Recently I decided to write them and let them know we were praying for them. Shortly afterward, we were able to make a connection and get a Japanese translation of the Gospel on our website.

India

Indian Flag

3. A pastor friend of mine gave me a prayer card for a Brazilian missionary to India, online casino Jefferson Quevedo Soares. I was very interested in this man because few Brazilian missionaries ever make it out of the country. Most are missionaries within Brazil”s borders. After recently making contact with him, he told me he has relatives that live here in the state of Rondônia. His brother contacted me today and told us that he knows someone living near our city looking for a good Baptist church. Praise the Lord! We are making contacts by means of India!

Please pray for missionaries

and

let them know you are praying for them!

“Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ”s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.” Romans 15:30
